Novel-Writing School?

The Novel-Writing School is about practical, hands-on course work.

I teach what I do. You learn the techniques, systems, and thought processes that I use to sell my books, and that my students are now using to sell their books, short fiction, and more.

You don't spend time on theory---on what people who have never made a living writing novels think should work. There's an enormous difference between theory and reality, and that difference is fundamental to whether or not you'll sell your work, and to whether or not you can hope to make a living doing it.

My courses are designed primarily for writers who want to sell their fiction. Any writer can take these courses and benefit from them. But I've put my heart and soul into making sure that writers who want to do what I've done... to live on their writing... learn exactly what it takes to do this, and exactly the processes I've used to keep my family fed for more than twenty years.

The Novel-Writing School is about you creating fiction YOU love.

You might have had a bad experience with a college class or writing group where you were criticized because you weren't writing the "right" sort of fiction.

You know what? There is no "right" sort of fiction.

What you love is what you should write. You can learn to write well, to tell stories that matter, and to create good work---in any genre.

The process of writing good fiction and telling good stories is universal.

You learn how to think like a writer
You learn how to create good ideas (and discover why and how they're different than bad ideas)
You develop characters you care about
You work out a story that matters to you
And then you write it.

In every class and in every course, you'll start by training yourself to think professionally. You'll learn the essential skills you'll need to write your book (or short story or screenplay or stage play) in your genre.

You'll learn how to make your work good, how to get it done. And how to move on to the next story. Because being a professional novelist isn't writing and selling a book.

Being a professional novelist is writing and selling one book, and then another, and another, and another...

What Are My Qualifications?

I've spent more than two decades now as a professional novelist, and during that time, I've kept my family fed and under a roof by writing fiction. What I teach is what I've done for twenty-plus years now.

I've sold more than thirty novels to major US publishers, and resold many of these books abroad, where I've been translated into about a dozen languages at this point. I'm recommended by reviewers and readers alike.

And for the last several years, I've been teaching other writers how to do what I do.
